Winter is coming but that doesn’t mean we have to kiss our summer tan goodbye. With Vita Liberata’s luxury tanning range, it’s easy to get a healthy bronzed glow. No tropical vacation required!

We’ve put together our essential Dos and Don’ts of self tanning so you can create your own natural-looking glow at home.

DO EXFOLIATE

Exfoliate with a body scrub at least 24 hours before tanning. This will leave skin smooth and help ensure a smoother application of the tanning lotion or spray. Pay special attention to the removal of rough, dry skin on the palms, feet, elbows and knees.

DO PULL BACK HAIR

Strands of hair can stick to the tanning lotion causing white uneven strips or spots. For the most natural-looking tan, you’d want to tan your ears and neck too, so tie up your hair to get it out of your way. For short hair, pin up your strands with bobby pins.

DO USE TANNING MITT

For professional-looking results and an even glow, apply your tanning solution with a tanning mitt. The mitt helps reduces streaking and protects your hands from blotches and unnaturally dark palms. Try Vita Liberata’s pHenomenal 2-3 Week Tan Lotion which comes with a free mitt. Work the tanning product over your skin in soft circles.

DO AVOID SWEATING

Physical activity may cause sweating which can result in unsightly streaks. All the more reason to just kick back and relax for an hour or two. If you’re looking to just add a healthy glow to your face, try Vita Liberata’s Self Tanning Night Moisture MaskApply at night before bed and wake up with soft, supple skin and a radiant glow.

DON’T GO TOO DARK

Picking the right sun kissed glow is similar to selecting the right foundation for your skin tone. The goal is to look naturally tanned and not like an orangey oompa loompa. For the best results, pick a shade that’s one tone darker than your natural skin tone.

DON’T SHAVE IMMEDIATELY BEFORE OR AFTER APPLYING

While getting rid of body hair allows for a smoother application, shaving can irritate the skin and create tiny cuts on the surface. Applying a fake tan will only cause further irritation. Instead, carefully shave a few hours before you intend to apply your tanning solution. Avoid shaving after tanning! It can affect the result of your tan.

DON’T APPLY DEODORANT BEFORE TANNING

Some deodorants contain aluminium which can react with the tanning chemicals and turn your pits an unsightly green. Avoid deodorant, or opt for a natural alternative, and wipe down armpits thoroughly before tanning.

DON’T APPLY PRODUCT DIRECTLY ONTO HANDS AND FEET

Avoid this to prevent unnaturally dark hands and feet. Instead, work the excess product on the arms onto the hands and from the legs onto the feet.
