1. Have you always known you wanted to be a makeup artist/ hair stylist?

Nope. The first thing I ever wanted to be was a figure skater. I remember watching the Lillehammer ’94 Winter Olympics and it was a wrap. There’s something really freeing about the idea of dancing on ice! I couldn’t pursue that dream, but I wasn’t discouraged, because I had many. Fast forward to my teens, I initially used makeup as a defence mechanism and a way to ‘hide’ my insecurities. I quickly discovered the art of makeup and used it as a way to express myself. It was a tool that helped me discover who I am. Knowing that I can also be a part of someone’s journey of self discovery through the art of makeup and hair is really a blessing.

2. Who is someone that has inspired you throughout the years in your career/life?

Definitely my mom. She is the perfect example of resilience. She is a single parent who raised six children all on her own and never complained. She just did it. Initially, my mom wasn’t so thrilled when she found out my career choice, but she always reminded me to constantly educate myself in whatever craft I chose.

As far as an artist inspiration, Pat McGrath changed my life. I first saw her work in John Galliano’s show in the early 2000’s and I never looked at makeup the same ever again.

3. What advice do you have for young women/men who aspire to make it in the makeup and hair styling industry?

Keep creating. Challenge yourself constantly. Discover something new daily. Don’t be afraid of being unique. Believe in your vision even if no one else does. People will catch on eventually.

4. Where do you get your inspiration from?

Literally, everywhere.  Especially out in the streets, I love people watching. It’s insane how much inspiration is out there from the most unexpected places. I love the Internet for audio and visual inspiration. I’m not going to lie, I’m a dinosaur on the web. Kids are so Internet-savvy and have such a keen eye. I watch the youth and see what they’re up to. They always know what’s next!

5. You recently resided in the UK, what did you miss most about Canada, if anything?

The first thing that pops into mind is food (that could possibly be because my stomach is growling as I speak, I’m always hungry!). This is going to be the most Canadian answer, but I really missed Tim Hortons and sushi. People have no idea how hard it is to find decent sushi in London. Also there is nothing that even compares to Tim Hortons! I was almost always #hangry while living there. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved London – I would go back in a heartbeat. But food-wise, Toronto takes the cake!

6. What is a current hair/makeup trend you absolutely LOVE ?

I don’t really follow trends per se. I like separating myself from all of that and just observing what’s happening. However, I do love seeing more people have multi-coloured hair. It’s been such a strong trend especially in the past couple of years. It’s definitely something I won’t get tired of seeing. Isn’t it such a dream?

For makeup, I love that women are becoming more and more daring with lip colours! Working in retail cosmetics for ten years, I remember the days when everyone just wanted a natural gloss. Now, the bolder you go, the better!

7. What is one item you cannot live without?

Oh gosh. I cannot answer this question. I am completely dependent on my skin care. I have multiple moisturizers and oils.  Rightnow, I’m using Avene moisturizer, Caudalie Beauty Elixir, and rosebud lip salve (mint).

8. What is a recent project you loved working on and why?

It’s like asking “who’s your favourite child and why?,” you just can’t choose! But, since you asked, I did recently work on a television show called The Next Star as their Beauty Expert. The show helps a group of six talented teen/pre-teen singers develop and showcase their skills. It was my first time working as a makeup personality and the crew made me feel incredibly comfortable. The kids reminded me of what it’s like to just be yourself and think/talk without a filter. It’s refreshing. The team and cast were also so lovely.

 9. What is the most common mistake women make when it comes to makeup/hair styling?

Not working with their natural facial features, hair texture, and using too much product. When I was teaching makeup workshops back in London, I’d request that each woman take a moment and look in the mirror bare faced. Many couldn’t do it for a second. It is a moment of honesty, which can be quite intimidating, but also very empowering. Many women think they need a lot more makeup, but they really don’t.

 10. What is your favourite pastime/ hobby?

Dancing. Eating. Napping X repeat.

 11. Tell us one guilty pleasure you have!

It’s a secret 😛

12. If you could pick one person to have lunch with (dead or alive) who would it be and why?

Michael Jackson because we’d probably moonwalk everywhere, discuss current events, practice a couple of dance routines for Vine, and we would literally have lunch in space. Also, because he’s bloody brilliant.

 13. Describe yourself using only one word!

KEWT.

14. What’s next for Mila Victoria?
